Telford is to be found in Shropshire and around 30 years ago did not exist as a place. Telford was created as a New Town – made up of the towns of Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley, Dawley and Ironbridge which all retain some sense of their history today but is now collectively known as Telford. Telford was named after its most famous adopted son – Thomas Telford – a Scotsman by birth he became a surveyor of public works in Shropshire in 1787. With an excellent reputation as an engineer he was given the task of building a bridge over the River Severn, known today as Ironbridge, he went on to build canals linking ironworks and collieries, bridges and docks as well as roads, Thomas Telford built more than 1,000 miles of road in his lifetime and it is no wonder that when Telford, the town, was being conceived that they should name it after such an influential individual who had strong links with the area. The town centre boasts a wide range of shops and multiples stores (around 140 shops at last count) whilst close by there is the ten screen cinema, a megabowl and ice rink, a 170 hectare town park together with fitness clubs hotels, Telford Racquet Centre and the Telford International Exhibition Centre in short wide ranging facilities for visitors and residents to appreciate. Telford though is not just a place to visit some of the most high tech companies in the world have selected Telford, Japanese and Taiwanese firms have come and this has seen an economic growth in the area that much of the West Midlands would be jealous of. But Telford offers more than just a great shopping centre and organised leisure facilities – there is so much to see, as a base from which to visit Newport, Bridgnorth, Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage site or the Severn Valley Railway to name but a few attractions, it is easy to appreciate the attraction that Telford offers. If you prefer the Shropshire countryside then don’t forget Telford lies at its centre and offers plenty for the hiker or mountain biker to enjoy, with the Wrekin close by from the top of which you can see 15 counties!
