Straddling the Staffordshire / Shropshire border is the market town of Newport nestling in the centre of a rural farming area. An interesting and picturesque town its design is typical of the Norman influence that prevailed at the time however today few of the medieval buildings remain whilst the remaining architecture is rich with Regency and Georgian buildings. Located as it is on a sandstone ridge the Romans first visited and used this for access to Whitchurch and this helped the town become an important centre for road communications between North Wales and London. The town grew in importance as a trade centre, trading in leather, wool, and fish – there was a fish farm close by which the local residents managed and they had the right to supply fish for the Royal table. In the mid 17th century there was a fire and this unfortunately destroyed much of the Tudor and Medieval buildings that formed this picturesque town. Its importance grew in the 18th century as a coaching town between London and Chester and in the 19th century the canal and railway arrived and today the Market Hall, built in 1860, remains as testament to the increase in wealth that the town saw. Today the residents of Newport tend to work in the larger towns in the area but when you visit this town you can appreciate their reluctance to live elsewhere simply because of the convenience that Newport offers.
