Craven Arms is to be found in South Shropshire surrounded by hills with the River Onny close by and the town couldn’t be easier to find as it lies on the A49 between Shrewsbury and Ludlow. Set as it is in the rolling countryside it is understandable that its economy was originally based on the trade of sheep, then with the coming of the railways (Shrewsbury to Ludlow) Craven Arms grew in importance through Victorian times to become one of the largest stockyards in the country at that time. Even though today the stockyards and trade in sheep has all but gone one thing remains, that is the picturesque surroundings in which Craven Arms finds itself. There are still, two railways to the town, the main Shrewsbury/ Ludlow line and the Heart of Wales single track rail line which takes you to the Brecon Beacons. Craven Arms is also home to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, an interesting building as it is roofed completely in grass and lies within 30 acres of riverside meadows which offer plenty for the casual rambler to enjoy. The Discovery Centre is also home to one of the most unusual experiences that can be had – a virtual hot air balloon ride over Shropshire.
