Whickham is a town four miles southwest of Newcastle upon Tyne in north east England. The name is an Anglo-Saxon term meaning ‘estate with a quickset hedge’ but the town is not mentioned until after the Norman Conquest, when in the Boldon Book, compiled for the Bishop of Durham in 1183, it is referred to as ‘Quykham’ and for which the Bishop charged each of the 35 tenants 16 shillings in rent for an ox gang of land (around 15 acres). Agriculture played an important role in Whickham’s history but it was overshadowed when coal was found to be available close to the surface, and easily mined. Used for centuries for domestic fuel it became more widespread in the fourteenth century. The Bishop of Durham granted a lease of the coalmines in 1356 thus forming the industry that would dominate the area until 1964. In the 16th century, national demand was high so wealthy merchants and landowners bought up land to maximize production to the loss of local villages whose crops were ruined by the wagons carrying the coal to the river which later spurned the railways causing further loss of land. Their legacy of large houses and extravagant lifestyle is visible to this day but since the last pit closures, the area has largely recovered and is once again rural and peaceful.
