Situated about 10 miles west of Sunderland and about the same distance southeast of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in northeast England, lies Washington. Designated a new town in 1964, it has industrial origins with areas named after famous local people such as Parsons, Armstrong, Stephenson, Swan and Emmerson The origins of the name are not that clear, although it is possible that Washington is derived from Hwaesingatun meaning ‘the descendants of the estate of Hwaesing’ which in turn, means ‘descendant of Hwaes’, a Norse term meaning ‘fenced off land’. Another possibility is that it comes from an Old English term with Celt origins ‘waesc’ meaning ‘to wash’ which combined with ‘inga’ and ‘dun’ would mean ‘people of the hill by the stream’ referencing its close proximity to the river Wear. There is a record of Wasindone from 1096. By 1539 the name had changed to Washington and it was from Washington Village that the ancestors of George Washington, the first President of America, lived. They immigrated to Virginia in 1657, ironically because of their support for the Royalists. The strange design and layout of the new town took influences from many towns in the United States, divided into small villages and then into further districts. The districts were subsequently removed however, due to confusion amongst visitors, so that only the village names now remain.
