Wallsend is a town located on the north bank of the river Tyne in north east England, close to Newcastle upon Tyne and across the river from Jarrow to which it is linked by the Tyne Tunnel. Situated at the southern end of Hadian’s Wall, the wall built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian to keep out troublesome Scots, it was literally where the wall ended. The excavated remains of the garrison fort of Segedunum can be seen at ground level. This fort was in use for around 300 years with an estimated population of around 600 men in 250AD. Wallsend developed as an active colliery town and major coal mining centre with seven pits active between 1778 and 1935, giving its name to an excellent variety of coal and was home to many Waggonways, the forerunners of the railways, used to bring coal down to the Tyne. There is a history of shipbuilding associated with Wallsend, which was home to Swan Hunter, one of the most famous shipyards from which many important ships were made including HMS Victorious, RMS Carpathia and HMS King George V and many used in both world wars. Charles Parsons also launched the revolutionary Turbinia here in 1884. The town is now much more diverse commercially, although the river still provides significant employment
