East Boldon, West Boldon and Boldon Colliery form a group of three villages situated between South Shields and Sunderland in northeast England. Originally part of County Durham, they now form part of South Tyneside. Once an ancient Saxon settlement, the name ’bol’ meaning building and ‘don’ or ‘dun’ meaning ‘hill, referring to an old wooden church on top of the hill by the river Don where the 13th century church of St.Nicholas now stands. Referred to in the Boldon Book in 1183, the original, ancient village became West Boldon whilst the nearby village of Newton became East Boldon, home to many of the tradesmen and merchants. In the Battle of Boldon Hill during the Civil War, Boldon stood between the Royalist Newcastle and Parliamentarian Sunderland, marking perhaps the beginning of the rivalry that still exists today. The population grew slowly but in 1866, with the increasing demand for coal, the Harton Coal Company built over 500 miners’ cottages creating a new village of Boldon Colliery. The land lay derelict for many years after the pit was closed in 1983, until 2000 when the colliery wood was planted with 2,500 trees providing an area for walking and recreation as well as a home for local wildlife. The Boldon area has seen much development in the last 30 years, with a new school, restaurants, businesses and shops
