Events in Gorey | 10 Places to Stay
The charming little town of Gorey (or Gourait) is about 5 to 8 miles from St Helier, depending upon whether you choose the inland route or the more scenic coastal route. Gorey has one of the Island of Jersey's three main harbours. It has a picturesque row of houses along its harbour. Below the castle there is a pier, which is the annual site for La Fete de la Mare.
The strategic positioning of the harbour has led to it having been fortified since at least as far back as the Iron Age. The division of the Duchy of Normandy in 1204 led to the creation of a castle at Mount Orgueil, built to help repel potential French invaders. The castle also served as residence for the Governors of Jersey until the 16th century when Elizabeth Castle was built at St Helier. The magnificent castle at Mount Orgueil overlooks the harbour at Gorey, but was saved from demolition only by intervention from Sir Walter Raleigh. He opposed a plan to recycle its stones for the new castle at St Helier with the words 'twere pity to cast it down'.
This popular tourist destination has many hotels to choose from, including Beachcombers, The Beausite Hotel, The Dolphin Hotel, La Maison Gorey, The Seascale Hotel, The Moorings and The Old Court House Hotel.
