Wellington is situated in the English county of Somerset, about eight miles South West of Taunton. It is both a market town and a small industrial town, standing in a beautiful country location between the River Tone and the Blackdown Hills. The earliest known reference to the town was made in a grant that dates from between 899 and 909, when the town was called 'Weolingtun'. It also appears in the 1086 Domesday Book as 'Walintone'. The main growth in prosperity for the town came later as a result of the wool industry, which has now declined. The town gave its name to the first Duke of Wellington (Arthur Wellesley). There is a a 175 foot high obelisk in the town, a monument to the Duke which is known as the Wellington Monument. The monument is visible from many parts around the town, but also the views from the monument itself are worth seeing, with Exmoor in one direction and the Vale of Taunton leading to the Bristol Channel in the other. Attractions in the town include the Wellington Museum and Local History Society, whilst nearby there is also Coldharbour Mill Working Wool Museum. Only 12 miles away is Tiverton Castle, dating originally back to 1106
