Wedmore in the Somerset Levels is a sizeable and well appointed village, with dental and medical provision, pubs, a first school, and shopping facilities for life’s necessities and a bit more. The settlement stands at a crossroads of two ‘B’ roads that lead to Cheddar, Glastonbury, Wells and Burnham-on-Sea, in a landscape dotted with many hamlets and smaller villages, the Mendip Hills just four miles or so north-east. The River Axe runs north of Wedmore, and the Brue south. Historically Wedmore’s claim-to-fame is the 9th century treaty accorded here by Alfred the Great with the Danes, whereby England was divided into territory in the South and West controlled by the Saxons, the North and East comprising the Danelaw. It is thought that Alfred may have had a royal hall or manor of some sort in Wedmore, one suggestion for the origin of the name being that it is derived from the Saxon for hunting lodge. Alternatively the name may have been a corruption of Wet Moor, before major drainage works were carried out in the district the ground said to have been frequently saturated. There are plenty of fine buildings in the village, including solid stone cottages around the green, a 14th century market cross, and several Georgian structures of which the Post Office is probably the most notable. Though the church, largely 15th century, is Grade I listed, it has a rival as the most striking edifice in Wedmore in the rococo Italianate house now home to the village pharmacy.
