Situated in a dry area of the Somerset Levels, the village of Street is found two miles along the A39 Bath Road, South West of Glastonbury at the edge of the Polden Hills. The origins of Street go back to Celtic times, when the settlement was known as Lantokay, meaning the Sacred Enclosure of the Saint Kea, a Celtic saint who had dealings with King Arthur. Some have attempted to link him with Sir Kay of Arthurian Legend. The Roman causeway Fosse Way from Glastonbury was rebuilt in the 12th century, giving Street its name (from the Latin 'strata' meaning paved road). The growth and prosperity of Street is mostly due to the Clarks the shoe and bootmakers. Part of a Quaker family, Cyrus Clark began a business making sheepskin rugs. He was later joined by his brother James, who first introduced woollen slippers, then boots and shoes. Ironically, the Clark children were often seen barefoot, rumour has it that this was due to advice from Clarks shoe experts! C&J Clark still has its headquarters at Street and is arguably the best known shoe brand in Britain. Visitors to Street can shop at the Clarks Village outlet shopping centre, featuring over 90 diverse stores.
