Shepton Mallet is an ancient Market town with a definite modern twist, placed on the western edge of the Mendips in Somerset. The fabulous Market Cross dates back to the 1500’s and still performs it’s function every Friday when the market is held. The Roman masterpiece The Fosse Way goes through the town. The annual spectacle of the Royal Bath Showground is here where dog shows, all things equestrian, crafts and flowers are all on display, of course there are live stock or how about watching bees and their honey or have a go at making bees wax candles… The East Somerset Railway is a chance to ride on a steam locomotive and to experience the magic and romance of yesteryear as it travels through beautiful countryside, or be prepared to be amazed at the wonders of Wookey Hole Caves, which have existed for millions of years and has a secret river and majestic encrusted caves, or why not see the Cheddar Caves and Gorge with Britain’s oldest skeleton. Longleat was the UK’s original Safari Park with lions and tigers and giraffes, ride on a safari boat, or see the Butterfly Garden or Postman Pats village. Shepton Mallet worth a visit….most definitely.
