Shapwick is a rural village which forms part of the Hundred of Whitley. The village situated in the Sedgemoor district of Somerset, on the Somerset Levels. It can be found just off the A39 Bath Road, to the West of Glastonbury. The particular layout of its roads and streets has led academics to label it 'the typical English village'. Half a mile up a winding lane you can find Shapwick House, a magnificent Tudor Manor House converted to a Hotel and set in seven acres of grounds amidst the beautiful Somerset countryside. Whilst in the area be sure to take in Shapwick Heath at sunset. In 1998 the largest hoard of Roman coins ever found in the United Kingdom (and the second largest ever found from the Roman Empire), some 9,238 silver denarii, was found in the remains of a previously unknown Roman villa near Shapwick. The hoard was valued and acquired by Somerset County Museums Service for the sum of £265,000. Once owned by Glastonbury Abbey, Shapwick is an ideal place to visit other parts of Somerset including the historic Glastonbury itself. Glastonbury is a popular tourist location, offering a wide variety of interesting places to visit, notably the Abbey and Glastonbury Tor.
