Mells is a village in Somerset, situated about three miles west of Frome and 14 miles from the historic city of Bath. The village appears to have been known by the name Iron Burgh around the year 1500. This would seem to be due to the rich deposits of Iron Ore extracted in the area at the time. The ironworks of James Fussell were leased in 1744 from John Horner. John Horner is perhaps better known as 'Little Jack Horner'. Legend has it that he was given a Christmas Pie to deliver by the Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey with the deeds to a dozen manors. According to the legend he extracted the deed for the manor at Mells, which included lead mines in the Mendips – hence 'pulled out a plum' from 'plumbum' the Latin for lead. Records show that Thomas Horner did indeed become the owner of the manor but his descendants denied the truth of the story. The ironworks themselves have become ruins but are now a designated Biological Site of Special Scientific Interest as they are now a breeding ground for Greater and Lesser Horseshoe Bats. When visiting this picturesque village you can stay at The Talbot Inn, a 15th century coaching inn offering en-suite accommodation and an award winning restaurant.
