The picturesque small town of Langport lies in the heart of the district known as the Somerset Levels. It claims to be the smallest town in England and is joined to the surrounding villages by a network of country lanes. It is five miles west of Somerton in the South Somerset district, along the A378. The town is set on the east bank of the River Parrett and this part was formerly known as Langport Eastover. The area that lies on the west bank was Langton Westover, now just Westover. It was an important town as far back as the Roman occupation and was a royal borough in Saxon times. In 1562 it was given its first charter by Elizabeth I, in recognition of its ancient status. This charter also granted a market on Saturday, but in the 19th century this was changed to Tuesday. In 1840 the Westport Canal was built between Westport and Langport. The intention was to facilitate trade with the port at Bridgewater. Among the historic buildings in the town worth visiting are The Tudor House and The Warehouse in Great Bow Yard, recently restored. If you are looking for food and accommodation you could try The Langport Arms Hotel and Carvery.
