Highbridge is a town in Somerset situated close to the Bristol Channel coast, near the mouth of the River Brue and on the very edge of the Somerset Levels. It is a market town whose importance increased with the growth of the railways, but suffered as they declined. Evidence has been found of Roman settlements in the area; the bridge itself is thought to have existed in some form back in Saxon times. It is not known exactly when the current stone humpback bridge was built. Highbridge grew into a regional market and industrial town between the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. The livestock and cheese market thrived, and other important employers were Highbridge Wharf, Buncombe's Steamrollers, and the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway rail works. Since the early part of the 20th century, the decline of heavy industry and transport hit Highbridge hard, causing many job losses. Highbridge is next to Burnham on Sea, a popular seaside resort with a beautiful sandy beach and home to the shortest pier in England.
