Glastonbury is probably the most famous place in Somerset. It is famous for its history and mystery but possibly more so for the Glastonbury Festival. This huge annual music and culture festival actually takes place several miles away in Pilton. Glastonbury was built on a group of hills that rise from the Somerset Levels. In the times before the levels were drained Glastonbury was often an island and is still known as the Isle of Avalon. Glastonbury is shrouded in mystery and legend. A popular story is that the mythical King Arthur held court on the Isle of Avalon and is buried there along with his wife, Guinevere. The church also once held court in Glastonbury at the Abbey. The Abbey is now in ruins but in 1086, when the Domesday Book was commissioned, Glastonbury Abbey was the richest monastery in the country. The most famous landmark in Glastonbury, and one that can be seen from miles around, is the Glastonbury Tor. This is a tear-shaped hill with a roofless church tower on its summit. Amazingly, St Michael's Church was ruined by an earthquake in 1275. The town has a busy high street with many good pubs and plenty of small hotels, Inns and guest houses.
