Situated eight miles south of the city of Bath, Frome is the fourth largest town in Somerset. Frome is a particularly attractive town, with cobbled streets winding up steep hills. It has the largest number of listed buildings in the county of Somerset. In AD685 the Abbott of Malmesbury, St Aldhelm, set up a mission on the banks of the River Frome and this sparked off the first permanent settlements in the town. The town originally grew due to the weaving industry and for seven centuries up until about 1650 it was bigger than the city of Bath. Frome holds the annual Frome Festival in July. It lasts for ten days and stages more than 160 events in and around Frome. A wide variety of musical genres are represented, but there are also literature, drama, film, dance and other workshops. As well as the abundance of historic buildings in Frome, a number of historic and picturesque villages lay within a few miles of the town, including the castle ruins at Nunney. Many fine walking trails exist around the area, details of which can be found at the Tourist Information Centre. It is also very close to the world famous Longleat country house and safari park.
