Exford is situated in the middle of Exmoor, in the county of Somerset. It lies 10 miles west of Minehead and seven miles north west of Dulverton. Exford is considered to be the very heart of Exmoor National Park, being also on the main route across Exmoor, the B3224. The village is situated on the River Exe and is famous for pursuits such as shooting, hunting, horse riding and fishing. In 1086, The Domesday Book recorded eight settlements in the parish, five called Exford and three others. In the mid 19th century the Exford Iron Ore Co. owned several iron and copper mines in and around the village. They are now all closed. The current bridge over the river was built in 1930 on a medieval site. Worth a visit in the village is the church of St. Mary Magdalene, also known as the Church of St Salvyn, a stone structure with a 15th century tower. Exford makes a fine base for walks around Exmoor National Park. When you return from your walks you can find rest and refreshment at The Crown Hotel, a coaching inn that is over 300 years old.
