The village of Dulverton lies in the heart of West Somerset, close to the Devon border. Dulverton is considered to be the Gateway to Exmoor, a National Park situated on the Bristol Channel coast of South West England. The headquarters of the Exmoor National Park Authority are situated at Exmoor House at the western end of the village. The villagelies between two rivers, The Barle and The Exe. The Salmon Traps on the Barle are a popular attraction only 10 minutes walk away from Dulverton. The village has been described as 'a true Exmoor gem' and its origins go back at least as far as its mention in the Domesday Book of 1086. The entry states that it formerly belonged to Earl Harold who was better known as King Harold of Battle of Hastings fame. The name Dulverton is thought to be of Celtic origin, dol in Celtic means a bend in a stream or river. Dulverton's housing consists of some old Victorian stock alongside modern houses with bungalows to the north. It is a popular tourist destination for people exploring Exmoor and has a number of small industries. Annual events in Dulverton include the Exmoor Food Fayre in October and Dulverton by Starlight in December.
