The tiny village of Cricket St Thomas is situated in a valley close to the A30 between Crewkerne and Chard. The village does not get its name from any connection with the sport cricket, in fact it derives from the Anglo Saxon word 'cruc' meaning ridge or hill. Cricket St Thomas is most famous for its Wildlife Park and the nearby Manor House and Estate. The Wildlife Park at Cricket St Thomas is full of exotic animals with the aim of placing them in environments where they can behave as naturally as possible. The park makes a great place to visit for the family but it also plays an important role in conservation, as well as providing a number of educational facilities. The manor house is known as Cricket House and has 14th century origins. It was rebuilt considerably at the beginning of the 19th century for Sir Alexander Hood. The house was used as "Grantleigh Manor," the setting for the television series 'To the Manor Born'. At the time the Manor House was owned by the father-in-law of the writer Peter Spence. Visitors can stay at the luxurious Cricket St Thomas Hotel, set in its historic gardens.
