The former royal burgh of Montrose is the most northerly of the Angus towns. It is situated on the east coast of Scotland. Montrose is a popular tourist resort and commercial port. Burgh status came with the reign of David II. Montrose is a historic town abundant in interesting architecture including the Town House or Ba Hoose 1763, the Montrose Museum and Art Gallery contains some Pictish cross-slabs, whaling mementoes and paintings. The High Street is the widest in Scotland, dominated by a detached 200 foot Steeple built in 1832-34; it sits next to the Church 1791. There is also statue of Robert Peel founder of the police. Montrose Castle was destroyed in 1297 by William Wallace when it was occupied by the English King Edward I. The site of the castle is known as Castlestead. Montrose enjoys a peninsular situation with the beautiful sandy beach at Lunan Bay to the east, the South Esk river runs to the south, and to the west lays the salt water, Montrose Basin, a nature reserve with scenic views over the tidal lagoon, home to a variety of wildlife including mute swans. Montrose has an 18-hole championship golf course, dating from 1562; this course is used as a qualifying course for The Open Championship.
