Glamis is a small village in Strathmore, Angus, situated 4 miles south of Kirriemuir and 5 miles south-west of Forfar. It is an ancient village full of historic interest. Glamis Castle is located on the outskirts of the village; once a hunting lodge from the 11th century and the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth (1900-2002). From the 15th century Glamis Castle was a large but simple L-plan tower incorporating the earlier structure. It was extended in the 16th and 17th century. It is a major visitor attraction allowing the public to view the Great Hall, with its magnificent over-mantle; an 18th century billiards room and a 17th century family chapel with walls illustrated by Jacob de Wet the Dutch artist. The Parish church founded around the 8th century is dedicated to St. Fergus. The present building dates from 18th century but retains an aisle from the earlier medieval church. Angus Folk Museum explores life in rural Scotland over the past 200 years; it is run by the National Trust for Scotland, they have restored a row of thatched roofed cottages in the village to give an insight into the domestic and agricultural life in the early 19th century. King Malcolm’s stone, a Pictish cross-slab, can be found in the garden of the village manse.
