The capital town of Douglas, with its bright lights and plentiful seaside attractions, is the island's premier tourist destination. It caters for contemporary tastes with shopping, theatres, restaurants, bars and nightlife while offering beautiful coastal scenery, an air of history and nostalgia, and activities for all the family. Located half-way along the east coast, it's also a perfect base for exploring the mountains, glens, castles and coves of this magical island. Douglas curves for two miles round a dramatic semi-circular bay, bordered by an unbroken series of promenades. Here, visitors may take a trip on the world's oldest horse-drawn tram service leading along the seafront past picturesque terraces of hotels and guest houses, eateries, entertainment venues and ornamental gardens. Retired tram horses may be visited and fed at the local Rest Home For Old Horses. Douglas Bay is notable for two landmarks: the castle-like Tower Of Refuge, built on a dangerous reef to shelter sailors waiting for help when their boats crashed there; and the Camera Obscura on Douglas Head, an old observation device once used - allegedly! - for spying on bathers and canoodling couples. The most scenic way to see the coastline is to travel northwards to Ramsey on the Manx Electric Railway. A lovely old steam railway, meanwhile, chugs through miles of stunning countryside between Douglas and Port Erin to the south. Young and old will enjoy discovering the history of the island at the interactive Manx Museum, or Man's noble military past at the Regimental Museum. Back in the modern world, Douglas has a TT Grandstand with excellent views of the famous motorcycle race. The town also boasts a National Sports Centre, hosting everything from swimming to squash and indoor bowls, and the attractive Noble's Park, with mini-golf, bowling, tennis, a skatepark and children's play areas.
