Derbyhaven, a small fishing village at the south-east tip of the Isle of Man, sits on a sheltered bay with shallow tidal waters - ideal for windsurfing, water-skiing, angling and sailing. Yachts and motorboats add colour to the harbour as they bustle in and out of what was, in the 17th Century, the island's main fishing port. With the decline of its kippering activities, Derbyhaven's inhabitants engaged in other industries. John Murrey's Smelthouse, an 18th Century ruin, still stands on the road to Langness, while the remains of a kiln used in the 1800s can be seen on the opposite shore. To the east of Derbyhaven Bay is St Michael's Isle, also known as Fort Island. Joined to the mainland by a causeway, it's famous for spectacular views and two ancient buildings: a fort built in 1645 and the ruins of a 12th Century stone chapel. Derbyhaven has a great sporting tradition. Near here, horses first competed in The Derby before the race moved to Epsom in 1779. Today, visitors come to the village for its proximity to Castletown's championship golf course and the excellent birdwatching opportunities at Langness marsh. Braver souls may book flying lessons at Derbyhaven's Flying Club.
