Castletown - once the island's capital and seat of government - is a charming town filled with historic sights. It also offers a good spread of modern facilities including an internationally renowned, 18- hole championship golf course. At the heart of Castletown, towering above the harbour, is Castle Rushen, an imposing and wonderfully preserved medieval castle. Around the town, the narrow streets and quaint cottages bring back the atmosphere of a bygone age as evocatively as its period buildings. The Old Grammar School, originally a church, dates from the 13th Century, and The Old House Of Keys, restored to look as it did in the 1860s, gives visitors an understanding of the island's eventful political past, while the centrepiece in the Nautical Museum is an 18th Century yacht called Peggy. In Castletown, you can hop aboard a steam train, stroll around the market and a variety of fascinating shops, or take a walking tour of the town. Experienced hikers might like to try the Millennium Way footpath to Ramsay. Situated on Castletown Bay, the town is great for fishing, sailing and watersports - and the annual Tin Bath Championship, attended by thousands, raises lots of laughs as well as money for charity.
