Whithorn is a village in Dumfries and Galloway in southern Scotland, situated 18 miles south of Newton Stewart. Whithorn is well-known as the resting place of St Ninian, Scotland’s first saint who brought Christianity in 397, dying in Whithorn in 431. The village was designed in the Middle Ages with a market square and garden plots, the focus of the village is the picturesque harbour, Whithorn is a popular tourist destination with a hotel, an inn, shops and amenities and yacht club. Historically interesting features include the Isle of Whithorn Castle; an L-plan tower house dating from c1600 and the church dating from 1834. Attractions include St Ninian’s Cave on the coast with crosses carved on the walls associated to St.Ninian, the early crosses found are housed at the Whithorn Museum. The restored ruins of the 13th century St. Ninian’s Chapel sits by the harbour and the Whithorn Priory is built on the site of the 1st Christian church in Scotland, inside there is a museum with an interesting collection of early Christian stones. The historic Galloway House Gardens were created in 1740 with tranquil walks amongst the shrubs, rhododendrons, azaleas, snowdrops and daffodils. Activities include cycling with marked cycle-routes, fishing, bird-watching, walking and golfing at the 9-hole St Medan Golf course set on the historic coast below Monreith Bay.
