Torthorwald is a small historic village in Dumfries and Galloway in Southern Scotland, situated between Dumfries and Lochmaben to the east of the Lochar Water. The rural village is surrounded by picturesque scenery, quiet country roads and an abundance of wildlife; it is ideal for walking and cycling with forest walks, tourist routes, trails and cycle paths. Torthorwald is a popular tourist destination with shops, services and places to eat; there are hotels, campsites, a holiday village and self-catering accommodation nearby. Historically interesting features include the ruins of the 13th century Torthorwald Castle, located in the centre of the village, the stone motte-and-bailey fortress was once the stronghold of the Kirkpatrick and Carlyle families, inside is an interesting turnpike stair to access the upper floors. The recently renovated the parish church dates from 1782 and is a cruck framed cottage complete with a thatched roofed. Nearby Dumfries is a busy shopping town with supermarkets, a cinema, theatre, pubs and night-clubs. Attractions include Burns House a simple sandstone house where Scotland’s National poet, Robert Burns, died in 1796 aged only 37, and Shambellie House, a Victorian country house which is now a National Museum of Costume with exhibits on fashion and social etiquette from the 1850’s to the 1950’s, there is a shop, tea-room, picnic area and wooded grounds.
