The smallest Royal Burgh in Scotland, New Galloway sits at the centre of a starburst of roads leading to Dumfries, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Newton Stewart, Ayr and Moniaive, so it is makes an ideal base for those exploring the region. And not just for those in cars either – nearby there are plenty of forest and country trails to follow – and well worth following, this is the beautiful landscape of forest, hills and moor immortalised by John Buchan in The Thirty-Nine Steps, when Hannay was going to ground. New Galloway itself has much to offer too: its long north-south High Street is typical of the area, squat greystone houses and shops mixed with foursquare buildings rendered white. With good pub provision, shops, an almost Ruritanian town hall, and two fascinating and contrasting little churches – Kells which is pure Borders, and St Margaret’s which seems to belong more to rural New Hampshire than New Galloway, it’s a place to walk around. And for those who enjoy spoiling a good walk (Mark Twain’s view of golf) there is a very pretty and nicely undulated 9-hole golf course, with views across Loch Ken snaking away a mile to the south of the town.
