Gretna is a village in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland situated at the head of the Solway Firth adjacent to the neighbouring village of Gretna Green, one mile north-west from the Scottish/English Border. Gretna was a planned village built in 1915 during WW1 to accommodate the workers of the great munitions factory which employed over 30,000 workers. The Devils Porridge Exhibition in Annan, explains the story of the factory. The village followed the principals of a 20th century government-sponsored ‘Garden City,’ and self-contained community to include the village hall, school, churches, shops and a cinema. Gretna is the model village for ‘homes built for Heroes’. The registry office was built in 1991 to assist its twin settlement at Gretna Green; the villages have become famous as the ‘marriage capital of the UK’, as Scottish Law allows couples to marry aged 16 without parental consent. Each year approximately 4000 weddings are performed in the villages and there is a variety of accommodation and facilities to cater for all tastes. Attractions include the ‘World Famous Blacksmith’s Shop’ built in 1754, and the museum with historical exhibitions and audio/visual displays. Nearby is a large retail outlet with excellent shopping facilities. Interesting features nearby include the Old Toll Bar, the first house in Scotland and the 7ft Clochmabenstane dating from the 2nd or 3rd millennium BC.
