Dalbeattie is an attractive town in Dumfries and Galloway in south-west Scotland situated opposite Dalbeattie Forest in the wooded valley on the Urr Water 14 miles south-west of Dumfries. Evidence of early settlers includes the remains of Bronze and Iron-Age hill-forts on the high ground around the Urr Water and a Roman fort on Buittle Hill. The fast flowing Dalbeattie Burn was used to power mills from c1600 and a small Clachan existed in the area from c1658, records show a school-master in Dalbeattie in 1751. Quarrying local granite started in the 1780’s and in 1781 two land-owners helped develop the town by renting part of their land on either side of Dalbeattie Burn, planned as a double settlement with the buildings constructed out of the attractive grey granite. By the 1900s Dalbeattie had two large quarries producing and shipping granite, used in structures including Windsor Castle, Liverpool Docks and Eddystone Lighthouse. Dalbeattie is a popular tourist destination surrounded by beautiful scenery, unspoilt coastline and sandy beaches. The town has shops, holiday accommodation and places to eat out. Interesting features include the Bridge over the River Urr built in 1797 and Dalbeattie Museum with exhibitions detailing the shipping and granite quarrying industry. The area is abundant with wildlife and walking trails with fishing is available in the steams and hill-lochs.
