Canonbie is a rural village in Eskdale in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland situated 5 miles south-east of Langholm and 2 miles inside the Scottish Border on the River Esk. The village developed in the Middle Ages after the Augustinian priory was founded during the reign of David the first (1124-1153), as the village was situated in the middle of the debating lands and often caught up in conflict it was named ‘Canonbie’ or ‘town of canons’. During the 19th and 20th centuries the main industry was mining for both coal and lime. Canonbie is a picturesque village looking over the River Esk surrounded by beautiful scenery, abundant with wildlife and internationally renowned for angling salmon and sea-trout, it is a popular tourist destination and an ideal base for visiting the attractions of Dumfries and Galloway. The village has a hotel and holiday accommodation, shops, pubs and places to eat out. Historically interesting features include the nearby Holehouse Tower once the stronghold of the Armstrong Clan and the red-sandstone village hall built in 1912. Nearby attractions include the Robert Burns House and the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum with exhibits of aircraft memorabilia. The moated Caerlaverock Castle and the National Nature Reserve can be found to the south of Dumfries
