Annan is a historic market town known as the ‘gateway’ to Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland situated between Gretna and Dumfries on the east-side of the River Annan on the north-shore of the Solway Firth, only 8 miles from the Border with England. The town dates back to the 12th century with its river port and royal castle built by Robert the Bruce. Annan received Royal Burgh status in 1532. Writer Thomas Carlyle went to school at Bridge House from 1802-1820, this elegant Georgian town house served as the town’s academy. Annan is a popular tourist destination with attractive red-sandstone buildings, hotels, B&B’s and camping and caravanning sites, the High Street has a selection of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants and a cinema. Historically interesting features include the Town Hall with clock tower built in 1878, the Annan Old Parish Church built in1789 and the Georgian design three-span bridge built in 1826 by Robert Stevenson. Annan Museum has collections of local archaeology, art and artefacts dating back 3000 years. The Devil’s Porridge Exhibition details the greatest munitions factory built in 1915. The River Annan is well-known for its salmon and sea-trout fishing, wildlife includes bats, otters, kingfishers and water voles. There are two golf courses and The Annan Shore Walk is a popular walk along the Solway Firth.
