Ponterwyd is a village in the Cambrian Mountains approx 12 miles west of Aberystwyth on the A44. Many visitors come here to explore the area around Devil’s bridge with its famous waterfalls. Ponterwyd is close to the Rheidol Valley railway station, so visitors can relax as they explore the countryside but others prefer to walk or cycle. The Nant yr Arian Forest Centre has miles of wooded trails for keen mountain bikers but keen ornithologists come just for the Red Kite feeding. Others enjoy walking around the trout-stocked Nant – y – Moch reservoir. Staying on the A44 towards Aberystwyth will bring you to the Llewernog Silver-Lead mines where visitors can stay above ground to follow the miners’ trail and go panning, whilst the more daring venture underground on a forty five minute cap-lamp tour. There are many places to stay in the area around Ponterwyd but any horse loving families could consider staying at the holiday cottage attached to The Ponterwyd Stud as this is often considered to be the home of Welsh Mountain Ponies. Ponterwyd itself has some interesting historical architecture; at its heart is “Hen Bont” an C18th bridge and adjacent is a late Georgian chapel with interesting features.
