Pendine, 13 miles from Carmarthen on the A4066, is best known for its vast expanse of Blue Flag status beach, stretching seven miles from Gilmore Point to Laugharne Sands. Motor enthusiasts come here to pay homage to Sir Malcolm Campbell and J.G. Parry Thomas who set & broke the World Land Speed Records five times between1924 & 1927. After Thomas lost his life in an accident, his car “Babs” lay undisturbed beneath the sands for many years, before being disinterred, restored and now displayed at the Museum of Speed. If you are visiting here don’t try to emulate these racers of yesteryear. Cars are now forbidden on the sands – the only way you can speed here is to join the Carmarthenshire Land Sailing Club as they are still allowed to kite board and land-sail here. Pendine has always attracted adventurers – Amy Johnson began her solo trans-Atlantic flight from here in 1933. For most of us the nearest we will get to these heroic feats is on a trip to nearby Oakwood Theme Park with its adrenalin producing rides. Oh and Pendine also has a very good Rock Festival (Music that is – rather than Geology) – attracting bands from near and far.
