Llanelli sits on the Bury estuary some 13 miles west of Swansea and 12 miles east of Carmarthen. It’s linked to the M4 Motorway by the A4138 and, though Llanelli is the largest town in Carmarthenshire and has hosted the National Eisteddfod five times, it is perhaps best known as home to the Llanelli Scarlets Rugby team at Stradey Park. Surrounded by small villages, this area has many rural attractions: The Millenium Coastal Park extends to Burry Port and the 13 mile long coastal path links Lougher to Pembrey. Historically a wealthy town thanks to coal and tin. (Llanelli was colloquially known as Tinopolis in the (19. ) Its fortunes waned with industry’s decline but Llanelly House is a fine example of an C18 Georgian town house and a joint development project between Carmarthenshire county Council and the Welsh Assembly Government means that the waterside area is undergoing extensive regeneration. You can pick up all the news and events from the local radio station (not suprisingly named Scarlet FM) and , if all this activity makes you thirsty, you can sample a local speciality. Felinfoel brewery is situated just outside the town so you know the beer will be great.
