Laugharne, positioned between St Clears to the east and Pendine to the west is, perhaps, most famous for The Boathouse - home of bad boyo poet and playwright Dylan Thomas author of Under Milkwood and a Child’s Christmas in Wales who called it “ this timeless, mild ,beguiling island of a town .“ Thomas set up home here with his wife Caitlin and is buried in the annexe to the 13th century churchyard, his grave marked by a simple white wooden cross. Nearly every pub in Laugharne claims to have been Thomas’ favourite and it makes a pleasant afternoon sampling the rival merits of each - though Brown‘s Hotel. seems to have most historical provenance. The Boathouse, kept as in his lifetime, is a fitting memorial to Thomas . After paying homage to him, today’s authors can find inspiration in the shadows cast by Laugharne’s ruined castle or by the river or in the cobbled lanes. Keen walkers can follow the foreshore south towards Sir John’s Hill, whilst admiring the triple estuary of the Taff , Towy & Gwendraeth rivers before returning along the farm lane . This is probably about 2.5 miles - so take refreshments along. The stretch of coast due west is packed with places to see ; The famous sands of Pendine. ( The erstwhile setting for the land speed record attempts and home to the Museum of Speed . ) You can take your own car on the beach here but watch out as the tides have caught many an unwary visitor to much local amusement. Slightly further is beautiful Amroth for beachcombing or exploring the slightly spooky tunnels carved through the cliff face that bring you out at Saundersfoot - a short walk to be rewarded by traditional ice-cream in this traditional seaside town.
