Fishguard, on the A487 between St David’s and Cardigan, is split into upper and lower towns. The upper contains the commercial centre with shops and hotels whilst the lower, nestling at the mouth of the Gwaun valley, is a fishing port with tidal quay. Fishguard hosts a lively annual folk music festival and for more Celtic connections, Strumble Head is the closest point to the Irish coast. Fishguard Harbour (confusingly nor actually in Fishguard but a mile away at Goodwick) is a major ferry port with high-speed catamaran crossings to Rosslare. But do be careful when you return to Fishguard - you don’t want to be taken for a marauder. Fishguard in 1797 was the site of the last invasion of mainland Britain but local heroine Jemima Nicholas armed only with a pitchfork captured 12 French soldiers - admittedly the invaders were under the influence of alcohol at the time, prematurely celebrating – as full surrender occurred quite quickly afterwards. The women of Wales are not to be trifled with! You can find a commemorative plaque to Jemima and visit the recently refurbished Town Hall where a purpose built gallery houses The Last Invasion Tapestry . Classic film enthusiasts will recognise many scenes in Fishguard, this was the location for the 1971 adaptation of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milkwood and Moby Dick was filmed here in the 1950s. For hikers and ramblers, the Pembrokeshire coastal path provides spectacular walking but if you are planning to covering all 168 miles of the route this is a good place to break your journey north. Castell Henllys just off the A487 by Newport (not to be confused with Newport Gwent) is a reconstructed Iron Age fort with craft making displays and also close is Carn Ingli Common renowned for its variety of wildlife.Plenty to do here.
