The Pembrokeshire village of Begelly today, which even combined with neighbouring Kilgetty could only muster 2001 souls in the 2001 census, gives few clues as to its distant industrial past: at one time there were so many coal workings here that it is said carriages refused to travel through the area for fear of subsidence. The last of its mines closed in 1860, and where once ran rail tracks carrying coal from Begelly and Thomas Chapel to ships at Saundersfoot is now in part a nature walk – birders will find snipe, kestrels and sedge-warblers here. The most striking building in the area is St Mary’s Church, complete with bell-tower and a charming Victorian lych-gate. Though its name is apparently derived from the Welsh for Shepherd, Begelly sits in the area known as Little England beyond Wales, English speaking since not long after William the Conqueror’s day. The village sits near the crossroads of trunk roads north-south from Tenby to Narberth, and east-west from Carmarthen to Pembroke, the village pub and hotel long known as a stopping point for those travelling through the area. Just a very short drive to the beaches on the Pembroke part of Carmarthen Bay it is also a good base for touring the sights inland, which due to its odd geography includes Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
