Usk (Welsh - Brynbuga) lies off the M4 at Junction 24, on the A449.Set in the Monmouthshire hills, on the banks of the river Usk; the town has many interesting features including a ruined Norman castle. The narrow cobbled streets converge in Twyn Square, with its central Victorian clock. Usk is often commended for its floral displays which have won awards locally and internationally - these add colour and vibrancy to the gentle quality of the town. Usk has individualistic shops ideal for a gentle meander. For a small place, (population 2,300) it offers international cuisine - French, Spanish, Indian & Chinese restaurants and a well respected health food shop & restaurant are all within striking distance of each other. Usk also has ten picturesque inns and pubs – perhaps best not to check out the unique features of each on one visit. But, if you then need to shed the calories you might choose a riverside walk or for the more energetic, there are numerous golf courses close by. Many claim Usk is an angler’s paradise but if your horoscope favours air rather than water, why not take to the skies at the South Wales Gliding club at nearby Gwernesney?
