Pontypool in Torfaen (pop.35, 000) is located on the A4042 between Newport and Abergavenny. There is an ancient legend that the town derives its name after local parson Dafydd ap Howell, wrestled the Devil for the right to build a bridge across the Afon Lwyd. He won and it’s said the town is named after him – more prosaically it’s likely to derive from the Welsh for “place of the pool.” One of the oldest industrial and once prosperous towns in South Wales, Pontypool’s fortunes were inextricably linked to those of the Hanbury Family who settled here in the 16th century and initiated the once important iron industry. They also created the American Gardens to provide work at a time of depression around the 1850’s. Unfortunately, the gardens have fallen into disrepair, but a scheme began in May 2005 to restore them and to create development opportunities for the local community. After a period in economic decline, Pontypool is undergoing much regeneration - Buildings are being refurbished, it has a new shopping centre and a fine leisure centre – located in Pontypool Park. Jazz In The Park - a weekend-long music festival, featuring headline acts alongside local artists is held each September.
