Llantrisant just off the M4 Motorway (junction 34) was chosen as the “new” site for the Royal Mint displaced from London to Wales between 1968 – 75. It used to be possible to visit the Mint to see your money being made but sadly “Health and Safety” considerations have stopped these visits. It is still possible to purchase commemorative coins etc.at the giftshop, near the entrance. This lovely hilltop village should be better known though, for its range of art and craft activities. It seems that every second building is a gallery, each with individual style and flair. Choose from The Old Bakehouse Gallery or the Butcher’s Arms with its coffee shop to the Hilltop Studio. Perhaps the supremo is The Model House Craft and Design Studios where talented craftspeople teach as well as display their skills. In the centre of the village is the cobbled Bullring Square with a statue of the famous druid, Dr William Price. If you need fresh fruit and flowers, The Bullring General Store is charming and traditional –and speaking of traditional – Traditional Toys stocks everything you remember from childhood. Just don’t expect to get the kids (big or little) out in any hurry.
