The Caldicot area was settled in prehistoric times and the Romans certainly had a presence there, but it remained a small agricultural settlement until the arrival of the railway age, gaining importance during the construction of the Severn Tunnel between 1879 and 1886. Transport infrastructure projects played a role again with the opening of the Severn Bridge in 1966 which brought increased traffic to the town, and again when the Second Severn Crossing opened in 1996. An equally significant economic boost came with the building of the Llanwern Steelworks nearby, Caldicot housing many of its workers. Economically the town has been hit by the decline of the Llanwern Works, though it has become part of the so-called M4 corridor which has balanced that blow. Caldicot has a particularly fine medieval castle on a strategic site near the Bristol Channel, now a 50-acre country park. Intriguingly in the middle of the 20th century the castle which is reputed to be haunted was used as rented accommodation, various furnished apartments in the fortress occupied by families. It is now a major attraction in the area, open to the public. There are also a couple of golf courses on the edge of Caldicot, the Venta Silorum Roman Town in neighbouring Caerwent, and the settlement is convenient for Chepstow, Newport and of course is easy to access by car near the M48 and M4 crossings of the Severn.
