Bridgend is located midway between Cardiff and Swansea. Originally a fording place on the river Ogmore, this once thriving agricultural centre saw massive change both in terms of growth and decline in parallel with the rise and fall of the coal industry. Today, this expanding town has a population of approx 40,000 and its economy is now based more on consumerism and technology than industry. Bridgend is also known for its designer outlet centre and as home to a thriving “indie” music scene. Urban Bridgend is not usually considered beautiful but the balance is restored as the surrounding countryside is very popular with outdoor enthusiasts. The National Cycle Route has an off road spur to the Celtic Trail and the renowned tracks at Glyncorrwg and Afan Valley are relatively near by. Another local attraction is Parc Slip a 305 acre reserve on a former open cast mining site. Managed by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, these woodlands, wetlands and meadows have been created for the benefit of wildlife and to encouraging ecotourism. A number of rare species live here, including great crested newts, brown hares, lapwing, bullfinch and linnets. Do watch out for the occasional adder though.
