If you find yourself in the Welsh Marches in the upper reaches of the River Severn and not too far from England yet nestling in Wales then the chances are that you are in Welshpool in one of the busiest market towns that Montgomeryshire has to offer. The area was, it is believed, first settled some 4,000 years ago by Neolithic Man and since then it has played host to Celtic tribes and the Romans who tried to invade but were held back by Carradoc, inevitably though the Romans established their rule and the area in and around Welshpool still bears their mark forts and roads today. To the east of Welshpool there are still visible today the remains of Offa’s Dyke, built around 785 by King Offa then Saxon King of Mercia and which runs the length of Wales. In 1240 Welshpool was granted a borough charter and during the 13th century the new borough was laid out along what is today Broad Street and High Street and Powis Castle, just South of Welshpool, was developed as a major stronghold. Today the original castle has been largely rebuilt and is home to the Earls of Powis and today still sees tourists visiting the Italianate Gardens and terraces to enjoy the splendid landscaping whilst the house and buildings are home a collection of art and memorabilia belonging to Clive of India. Today Welshpool makes an ideal base to explore the history and mythology of the area, with such picturesque countryside offering many rural pursuits it is no wonder that Welshpool remains a favourite destination for many.
