Located in mid Wales in Montgomeryshire Llanfyllin is probably a name that is familiar to those who watched the BBC series “Restoration” in 2004. It is in Llanfyllin that “Y Dolydd” , a Victorian workhouse was built, unfortunately it didn’t win the programme however its supporters continue to campaign and raise funds today. Llanfyllin also boasts a long history set as it is amongst the rolling hills of Mid Wales, it is said that the town took its name from St Myllin, a 7th century Celt and the church is also named after him. The church dates from around 1706 whilst the bells were installed around 1714. There are plenty of architectural influences in the town, and a stroll around the traditional local shops will provide an interesting trip, opposite the Church is a house dating back to 1740 whilst there are other Georgian buildings of note in the town. Llanfyllin is officially a town and not a village as it was granted charter as a borough in 1293 Llanfyllin. This means that it is relatively unique as it is actually a town with its own elected mayor. Its location in the Cain Valley makes it an ideal location for those who wish to travel around Mid Wales and Snowdonia and if you happen to be there during June and July then there is the Festival of Music, founded in 1971, it still produces year on year a festival of music embracing the classics attracting many well known artists.
