Close to Newton and lying alongside the River Severn and in the heart of the valley lies the village of Caersws. The town can trace its history back to Roman times, the River Severn was in Roman times known as Sabrina, the Romans built two forts here and excavations have revealed the ruins of some interesting stone buildings. After the Romans left it would seem that the area was left very much to its own devices and this led to some turbulent times under Norman rule, it was however to change for the better with the Tudors and Stuarts who brought more peaceful times with them. In 1871 the railway opened a branch line from Caersws to the Fan Mines, which at the height of its production employed 1000 men. The roads also began to improve in the 19th century and stage wagons and stage coached appeared and around 1821 the bridge to Caersws was built. For travellers Caersws has a long history of being an hospitable place, today it boasts its own football team, since 1978 trotting races (involving horses and rigs racing around a set course) have been regularly held here and strange as it may seem today Caersws has a long tradition of playing quoits. For those who prefer to enjoy the local scenery then a trip to Bwlchgarreg is recommended as this area plays host to Llyn Mawr – a lake famous for the birds, its aquatic plants and coarse fishing, Llyn Du and Llyn Tarw offer splendid views and excellent trout fishing.
