Tiny Mutford is one of those quiet Suffolk settlements which seem more like a group of houses that just happen to be in the same area, rather than a formal village. It has its church to the north, Mutford Hall to the south, and the little Hundred River (really a stream) to the west. A haven of peace just a mile south of the A146, Mutford is reached via pretty little lanes through the gently rolling farmlands of North East Suffolk. The place has a lot more in common spiritually with rural Beccles, four miles to the west, than bigger neighbour Lowestoft, five miles north east. This was ploughland before the Conquest, when it was held by one Earl Gyrth, as it was ploughland belonging to the King in the Domesday Book, and it remains ploughland to this day. To the north of the settlement is to be found St Andrew’s church, much of which dates from Saxon times. St Andrew’s stands on high ground, the tracks around it having sunk with use through the centuries, its round Saxon tower (Suffolk’s tallest of that type) topped with a 14th century octagonal belfry visible from miles away. There is a lovely Galilee porch built against the tower, the only such porch paired with a round tower in the country.
