Mildenhall, a pretty market town on the River Lark in Suffolk’s fen country, is known to have been settled since pre-historic times – Neolithic objects have been found in the area, including a wonderful pottery bowl. The area continued to be of importance through the Roman occupation of Britain, a fact emphasized by the find in 1943 (only revealed in 1946) of “The Mildenhall Treasure”, now kept in the British Museum. Details of the treasure are to be seen in the Mildenhall Museum in King Street. This extremely valuable collection of silver dishes, some possibly made in Rome, was buried in nearby Thistley Green in the 4th century. Mildenhall’s St Mary’s church bears witness to the town’s continuing prosperity through medieval times, with some features dating from the 12th century, its impressive tower reaching 110 feet above the ground. During the Commonwealth Puritan iconoclasts vandalised the church, and it is said that a pike-head is still visible in one of the carvings on high. The church is at one side of the historic market place, where markets have been held since the 15th century if not earlier. In the market place you will find a 16th century hexagonal market cross, which is also a pump. Although the town has a population of about 11,500 this is swelled by those at RAF Mildenhall, a huge airbase north west of the town. The airbase was constructed in the thirties, and many local facilities have followed its growth – for example The Bird in Hand pub was built to serve it.
