Dunwich is in the county of Suffolk, within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. Dunwich was the capital of East Anglia 1,500 years ago when it was a prosperous seaport and centre of the wool trade. In 1286 a large storm swept much of the town into the sea and the Dunwich River was partly silted up. The remainder of Dunwich was lost to the sea over a period of two to three hundred years. Most of the original buildings have disappeared, including all eight churches. There is currently a project to reveal the 'lost' city with high-tech underwater cameras. St James’s Church was built in 1832 when the last of the old churches fell into the sea. The remains of a Franciscan priory called Greyfriars, and a lepers’ chapel in the grounds of St James’s, can still be seen. Dunwich Museum shows the history of Dunwich from Roman times and chronicles its natural history and disappearance into the sea. Dunwich is the destination of the annual bicycle ride, the Dunwich Dynamo, which leaves from Hackney in London every July. A short walk from Dunwich is Minsmere which has a famous RSPB reserve. The quaint resorts of Walberswick and Southwold are close by.
